It was only fitting that vibraphonist Cal Tjader launched the Concord Picante label with this release for Tjader did a great deal to popularize Latin-jazz La Onda Va Bien songs. This was not his strongest effort (the solos of Tjader and flutist Roger Glenn are not all that substantial) but the drumming of Vince Lateano and the percussion of Poncho Sanchez keep the momentum flowing on these likable performances La Onda Va Bien album for sale. ~ Scott Yanow

I have long been a fan of Cal Tjader (practically my entire lifetime), and this is one of his better albums when he was signed to the Concord label. The album opens rather low key with "Speak Low," but Tjader hadn't forgotten how to kick it up a few notches: "Mambo Mindoro" (which closed side one) and Edu Lobo's tune "Aleluia" (which opened side two) have that familiar energy of years past. Great album!
I already own this title on vinyl (two copies) and CD, but wanted to get this in high-resolution digital format. These are getting scarce on SACD, but it is a nice sounding album, if maybe a bit sterile (as some Concord recordings could be). Still it frames the Tjader combo nicely. I suggest grabbing a copy while you still can. This is one of only two Cal Tjader recordings on SACD--the other is an off-beat title, Latin + Jazz = Tjader, which was an alternate version (perhaps a different set) of the live recordings made for the "Plugs In At The Lighthouse" album on Skye. Well worth grabbing if you can find it.
