西班牙语是西班牙的官方语言(español），也是拉丁美洲大多数国家的官方语言，联合国的工作语言之一。此外，美国南部的几个州、 菲律宾以及非洲的部分地区（包括赤道几内亚、西撒哈拉以及西班牙的非洲领土部分休达和梅利利亚等地），也有相当数量的使用者。属印欧语系中罗曼语族西支。西班牙语（español或castellano），即卡斯蒂利亚语，是世界第3大语言，也有资料说是第2大或第4大语言。在七大洲中，约有亿到五亿人使用，其中绝大部分在拉丁美洲国家。很多说西班牙语的人把他们的语言称为西班牙语（español），而很多说其他语言的西班牙人称西班牙语为卡斯蒂利亚语（castellano）。另一方面，拉美国家的人更喜欢español这个词因为castellano听起来更像是一个民族，而不是一种语言。说英语的人称西班牙语为Spanish，就是español的英译。
