New Year’s is a time for celebration and positive feelings about the future. As the saying goes, “Out with the old and in with the new.” Fireworks often play a part in New Year’s Eve celebrations, but different cultures around the world have their own unique ways of celebrating the start of a new year.
In Italy, luck for the new year comes with eating the right kind of food. They believe a dinner of lentils and pork will bring you luck and money in the coming year. You might feel like taking a walk after this delicious dinner, but don’t go near house windows. It’s an Italian custom to throw old belongings out the window as a symbol of letting go of the past.
Danish people also get to throw things on New Year’s Eve. There, old dishes are saved all year. When December 31 comes around, they go to their friends’ houses and throw the dishes at the doors. If you see a lot of broken dishes at the door of a house, you know that family has a lot of good friends.
Luck seems to be on everyone’s mind as the new year starts, and people in Brazil have a unique way of attracting it. They wade into the ocean, jump over seven waves, and make a wish for luck in the new year. If you’re in Brazil on New Year’s Day, you’ll also see a lot of people wearing white since this color is thought to bring luck to the wearer.
What you wear also matters on New Year’s Eve in Mexico. Those looking to find love in the new year wear red underwear. Wearing green underwear is supposed to bring money, and white underwear may bring good health.
People in Germany also wonder what wonderful things the new year will bring, and they have a fun game to try to guess. They melt a little ball of lead and then drop it into a bucket of water. The shape of the cooled lead is supposed to hint at what events will happen. If it looks like a ring, you may get married. Lead in the shape of a ship means you can look forward to a journey.
New Year’s around the World
New Year’s celebrations don’t always fall on January 1. In Vietnam, New Year’s Day is celebrated between mid-January and mid-February. Vietnamese families traditionally display a New Year’s tree that they have decorated with good luck charms.
The beginning of spring—around March 21—is considered New Year’s Day in Iran. The celebration is called Nowruz, and it has been going on for 15,000 years. For this holiday, Iranians thoroughly clean their houses and fill them with lucky flowers, like tulips and hyacinth.
Many people in northern India celebrate New Year’s much later in the year. The Festival of Lights—a Hindu New Year’s celebration—doesn’t occur until October or November. Lamps are lit and fireworks are set off to symbolize good triumphing over evil. Neighbors share sweets and snacks with each other, but the beautiful lamps and colored lights are the stars of the festival.
New Year’s Day is celebrated at different times and involves a variety of customs. However, these celebrations and customs all have something in common—hope. At the beginning of a new year, it feels like anything is possible.
